Mindspace Wins Best of Show at Phoenix-Metro Addy Awards
March 8, 2010 – Tempe, AZ
From using it as an office chair jousting helmet to bolting it to the hoods of their cars and driving around Tempe, the employees at Mindspace are putting their “Best of Show” Addy Award trophy to good use, refusing to let it collect dust in some snazzy awards case. The award was given out on March 6th by the American Advertising Federation’s Phoenix-Metro Chapter.
Out of 723 entries from 74 companies—many with gigantic budgets and resources—Mindspace emerged from the Addys with the Best of Show award for “The Mindspace 2010 Calendar of Rejected Campaign Slogans,” — a desktop calendar filled with faux advertising campaign slogans.
“The wheel gets attention, fire gets all the applause, but the calendar is an overlooked and under-appreciated step in the evolution of modern man, and we felt it needed greater recognition,” said Brent Shetler, Principal and Creative Director at Mindspace about the decision to create a calendar. “Our calendar is amazing, and we’re fairly confident that it keeps the day of the week, date, and month as good as or better than any other calendar on the market today.”
Braving the danger of hot glue guns, Mindspace not only designed and wrote copy for the entire calendar, but also assembled it during a pre-Christmas office party. Some sample entries include:
• March 12th—eHarmony.com—“Using 29 different dimension of compatibility to weed you out”
• January 11th—Cheeze Whiz—“The Area 51 of dairy”
• February 9th—Greyhound—“Leave the driving, temperature and music controls to us”
• August 9th—Crest Toothpaste—“9 out of 10 dentists don’t have to worry about their brakes being cut”
• October 1st—ExxonMobil—“Like you’ve never spilled anything before”
• November 16th—Depends—“Either way, someone’s going to know”
• September 22nd—Yahoo!—“How about saying “I yahooed it” for a change?
On a daily basis, Mindspace updates their Twitter feed with the current day’s rejected slogan. In addition to winning “Best of Show,” Mindspace also won a gold award for the calendar, a silver award for Elluminate’s “I Learn Differently” campaign and a bronze award for Savvy magazine’s Avril Lavigne editorial design. The calendar will now move on to the regional Addy Awards for judging.
